Coral Sea is making me sad... :-(

Was playing Coral Sea last night and it's amazing how it's raised TKing to a whole new level. There were four guys on a server who called themselves Invisible Pricks #1, #2, #3, and #4.

They were using a cheat that did, in fact, make them invisible. They had somehow got inside the tower on the carrier and were spamming grenades throwing them *THROUGH* the wall.

Another guy would jump into a bomber, pull it forward and block the takeoff of new planes, then jump into the gunner position and start hosing everybody.

On the plus side, I figured out that you can take a Corsair and immediately turn left and drop off the side of the carrier. You pick up just enough speed to avoid going in the drink.

Also, I got some great practice bombing carriers. It's not super-difficult to fly along the centerline of the ship and then do a hammerhead stall and stay out of the field of fire of the Axis AAA.

I think Coral Sea could be a really fun map to do in a team setting. I'd certainly like to try it in practice one of these days.

I'm still trying to figure out whether there's any point to defense on that map. I've tried manning a pair of AA guns, and I'm not sure it's time well spent. Ditto for the people who try to defend the carrier with planes.

I suspect that in team play both teams will do a blitz and the game will be over in three minutes. Two bombs from each of eight or twelve players on their first run probably sinks the carrier. It would be interesting to try a practice where one team is all O and the other team is half O and half D.

That's probably true on a pub, but put a dozen serious enemy pilots in the sky and that carrier will go down before the engineers have their wrenches out.

The problem is that the carrier doesn't scale to match the players. On a pub you might have 10 idiots and 2 real players per team. It takes a while for the 2 real players to sink the carriers. But put 12 real players on each team and the game will take one sixth as much time -- unless they can make defense really work.

It's like a math problem. Team A puts everyone on O and, without defense, will sink the team B carrier in eighty seconds. Team B puts 11 men on O and one on D. They will sink the team A carrier in ninety seconds. It takes ten seconds longer because they're short a guy. The question is: Can the one guy on D for Team B slow down Team A's offense by more than ten seconds? If so, then he's in the right place and his team will win. If not, his team loses because he should have been on O where he would have been more effective. Put more simply: By moving a guy from O to D, are you slowing down their O more than you're slowing down your own O?

Thats a quandry to face on every map. Where to put your resources where you get the most bang for the buck.

In most cases its the enemy spawn. :D

Sorry, I still gotta disagree with you here. Only two planes can actually take off on a carrier at one time. Then there is a few seconds until the next two appear. That means the planes will probably attack two at a time. If there are three people on D they can easily shoot those two planes down with the AA and repair any damage to the carrier. Anyone on O can spawn as an engineer and do any needed repairs they can before taking off again. It's simple if everyone sticks to their job and pays attention to repairing the carrier.
