I am picking up a copy tonight (if there are any around) and want to know what realm are you playing. I want to join up and have a char in the right one so we can possibly get some group playing setup.

Be sure to post a full "First Impressions" report... After the debacle that was WWII online I want to wait until I get a few real-world reports...
Amen to that, Squid... ;)
I picked up DAoC. Playing on the Gueneviere server as Faldar, the elvish enchanter. The game is pretty darn good and very polished. This game had a very smooth launch, that is why there has been no news on its launch unlike WWII and AO which flubbed everything in their launches. In fact Gamespot used DAoC as an example that companies have no excuse for releasing unfinished products.
The gameplay is very much like Everquest but many of the everquest frustrations are removed. The quests in the game are well designed and actualy give you good rewards.
DAoC requires some heafty hardware compared to EQ but if you can run T2 reasonably then you probably have a system that can run DAoC. The lag has not been very bad either, I see some slowdowns in towns with lots of people around but not much performance hit. I have only crashed a couple of times including in beta. And the servers have had a few crashes (as is expected) but not a lot and definetly is acceptable considering how overall stable the game is. However those running Win2k might want to look at Mythic's support areas as I hear there are some crashing problems associated with 2k, no idea if this affects Millinium, I stick with Win98 since it is proven technology and I don't like "fixing" thingss that ain't broke.
Oh, and I did find out if you hold down the tilda (`) key then you can manuver your view around. Now the only complaint I can think of is that you have to exit the game (/quit) to change your options such as keyboard settings. But Once I figgured what I needed to do (in Keyboard settings set to "RPG Default" sets it to basicaly default EQ controls then I customize a bit, even set the mouse look button from being cntrl to the right mouse button so I can mouse look exactly as I did in EQ).
Anyway to sum it up my first impressions have been very good, the game is very stable with one of the best MMORPG launches ever.

Faldar, elven enchanter of Hibernia on the Guenevere server.
I personally don't like the heavy pvp aspect of the game that I have read about so far. Plus once you choose a side you are not able to interact with anyone (in game) on the other side. I don't much care for that idea either.
I don't know how the actual graphics look ingame, but to be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with the screen shots I saw. Compared to future games like Star Wars galaxies and World of Warcraft, DOAC looks lacking. I think I will wait for those two big titles to come out next year before I jump back into massive multiplayer games.
This is what people like about DAoC. There are arch enemy realms. You can't talk to them. It's kill or be killed. Verant bent the DD rules to their liking and made EQ for repetitious leveling, acquiring items and money, and grouping with anyone regardless of race. No danger except for predictable NPCs. EQ is a gold rush for pompous inclined people and too much like the real world. At least EQ has a diety PvP server that definitely revived my dwindling interests. I've seen some level 6 and up players that get real upset when some level 50 something puts them down with one blow, but they have no recourse. The GMs will not respond to anything but verbal abuse. It adds some danger and new strategy beyond the boring and repetitious level and acquire.
All RPGs are repetitious but shooters are spawn, kill, die, spawn, kill, die which bores me much quicker. Just my personal druthers.
I have not seen any PvP in DAoC yet. The place for PvP is a higher level area, I believe. I have been to some great big doors built in the side of a mountain but was unable to open, apparently you are not able to open them to go to the disputed territories till you are higher level than I (level 5). I don't know how it is going to pan out with PvP but from what I have read if you don't want to PvP you don't have to there will be lots of content in your safe homeland. I am still a newbie though so I shall see.
I do like how they do death. No nake corpse runs! You loose exp for death after level 6, you get returned to your bind point and a tombstone apears with your name that you can return to an /pray to regain some or most of your lost xp. You can only have one tombstone at a time so if you die on the way back your first one dissapears and you loose that xp. Not a big deal to me since xp is a little easier to get than in EQ so if you don't care and don't want to run back no bigie, you loose no equipment.
I am with Moon on the PvP stuff. Leveling to aquire stuff to level more with got boring to me. I saw no reason to "race to 60" since my question is never answered "Once you reach 60 then what? Why the rush to get there?". I had a lot of fun up to level 35 or 40 but after that I just saw a pain in the ass ahead and not a lot of stuff I wanted to do (10 hour camps in Hate? Sounds boring). The PvP aspect made me feel like there was a reason for leveling. Sides it make more sense for my Ogre to kill an elf on site rather than group with him.

You've probably noticed that the EQ side of the GNV guild is fizzling. A lot of people have switched to DAoC and many others have dropped out due to lack of interest. I see they are going to have a meeting to determine if there is the support to keep it going. I've never had any luck grouping with those people. For the last few months it's just been the level 57 to 60 clique group and everyone else has been mostly excluded. I came in at the wrong time. There are some of the 60 level people that aren't having much fun but they just can't bear to give it up because of their great investment of time. I'm still having a little fun with it because I'm patient with the game. I'm just impatient with people. When it ceases to be fun for me I'll cancel my account.
Yeah, the GNV lost me a long time ago for exactly the reasons you stated. The main problem I had was that everyone was playing every day for many hours, and I mean every day (many of them are still very young, just out of college or still there and seem to have more free time than I do). There was no way I could keep up in levels because I started to get a life again, then had (and still have) health problems that make gaming uncomforatable sometimes. GNV people are good people unfortunatley they are a clique even though they try not to be but it ends up with the same people grouping with the same people and if you don't make efforts to keep your name on their lips then they will forget about you. I am not much of an in game chatter unless I know someone pretty well so I never made it into the "in" crowd and eventualy just faded away. No hard feelings on my end, I was just never a part of the clique and because I could not keep up with them and was always forgotten.
So my days with GNV are over without even saying goodbye to them since I doubt any even remeber me aside from Rohaas (aka Askaa and Vorkrieder), Niffin and Sinadria whom I work with. The reason I am on DAoC on the Gueneviere server is because that is the server that most GNV have migrated to and my work buddies are going there with them to try out DAoC. I have no real intention of joining the GNV guild on DAoC, not much interested in the guilding thing at the moment anyway.

Im playing on the merlin sever when I get the chance, work been real busy lately.
Is there any interest in getting an [AK] guild going in DAoC?
If there is I am all for it, doesnt matter which server. I'll start a new character.
Wick
Now that would be interesting. The name would fit the genre pretty well too.

My first impression of DAoC: Wow!!... what a game. 20x less loading time than EQ, more streamlined than eq.. like zones run into each other (kinda like a big zone with sections, no loading in between). It is a great game on my computer (referring to Dial-up). I picked it up yesterday (Friday) and already have an almost lvl 3 Avalonian Fighter (Paladin i what I will choose) on Gueneviere. I give it 11 on a scale of 10.. haven't had any problems at all. :D Wish I never would have wasted money at all on AO... BTW WW2O still free online? Heard a rumor that it was.
Ok....by my count thats, Goob, Widowmaker, Slaughter, and Moon I couldn't tell if you have the game or not by your post. Any thoughts of all gravitating to one server so we could do some playin? I'm all for it. Let me know.

I have found my Evercrack......
DOAC is in a nutshell......a great game.
The graphics are really superb. The network code is tight...I have only been dropped twice in about 20 hours of play.
The down side is it is kinda slow getting a character started, and there is a lot of running from here to there. I get most of my XP from doing tasks for the npc's. They normally consist of taking a package to a person in another town, which gets kinda old....but you get paid and lots of XP.
Right now I am a level 7 Highlander Armsman/Blacksmith ( you can learn to craft armor and weapons then use or sell them) I play on the Isulet (sp?) server in Albion. I dont like the roleplaying aspect with the hardcores out there, plus it is not overcrowded. The most I have seen has been about 1200 players.
Me and my buddy (level 7 Paladin) would love to get a guild up and runing. When you get to a higher level you need more party members to make it through the quests.
If someone wants to join or start up a new character, let me know. We can group up and get a ton of xp.
The August Knights guild would be sweet. I wish you could switch between servers though....I would dred starting a new character after spending the whole weekend just to get to level 7.

Is there a monthly fee associated with this game?
