And it's a Whiff. 15 months for a 4s. It took 15 months to put on an incrementally better processor and camera.
Expectations not met.
I'm sure it's a great phone and all, but hardly worth rushing to your provider to beg for an upgrade.

Since I don't presently own an iPhone it's new to me and frankly looks pretty sexy. I'm going to buy one next week. Yeah, it's not an iPhone 5 but considering I'm using a crappy LG phone that is 3+ years old it'll be a huge upgrade.
We'll be upgrading one of our phones to a 4S and another to a flat 4. Day after launch and there are still lines. Not sure how much of a "whiff" this is...really.
Yeah, if by whiff you mean "huge success" then you're right. :)

4 million sold over the weekend.
By whiff, I meant failure to meet expectations of a new form factor with a larger screen, 4G connectivity, and other improvements beyond predictable swapping out 18 month old chips for the latest versions.
The phone itself is no doubt a phenomenal phone! I may get one myself - as cool as Android is, the permanent Beta status of it does get tiresome at times. Chief problem with Android phones is the hardware and the OS aren't perfectly integrated, so there are performance limitations, and excessive power usage causing poor battery life. And it's not nearly as open to user customization as one was lead to believe - I find Android about as locked up as I found iOS on my iPhone 3G.
Back to iPhone 5- As to 4 million sales on opening weekend. Well - I've never been a fan of the whole "If Apple put their symbol on a turd..." type statements - but come on, you have to appreciate that of course if it's a new Apple product - it's going to kill no matter what it is these days. Especially when the star dies and the crowds mourn right before the big release. Hell, SpiderMan 3 and Twilight:New Moon had #3 and #4 biggest opening weekends of all time at the box office. I wouldn't use opening weekend sales as the only benchmark. I'd use that as a benchmark of a phenomenally run business.
Like I said, I think it's a great product, and may well buy one. But as an engineer (and closet Apple fan) - I was hoping for more.
I don't want a new form factor. I certainly don't want a bigger screen. The current size fits perfectly in my pocket. I've used Sprint 4G. It was great in the few tiny areas where it was available.
4G coverage has a long way to go before it becomes any sort of meaningful incentive to me.
that's what everyone said about 3G squidly:)
4S does have some cool features, but I understand where clay is coming from with "it's not a 5".
I've been doing a lot of research in the mobile space lately, and there truly is a phone for everyone. I'm personally waiting on the HTC Holiday for the 3D camera use in 720p HD, and standard in 1080p.
I still flip back and forth between the iPhone and an Android. They each have their pros and cons.
Loving my iPhone 4S. :glasses:
Upgraded to 4S...works great.
I have a 4S, my wife has a 4. 4S is faster, screen resolution is about the same, and the camera is better. Of course I went from 3G to 4S, so it's a world of difference, 4 and 4S, not so much :)
Camera startup and shot-after-shot performance is light years better. Overall it feels snappier. If you use Siri, (and I do) it's significant. The cross application dictation feature is amazingly accurate.
Bottom line though - if my 4 wasn't broken and off maint, I would've waited until the 5.
I just picked up an HTC Vivid, pretty snappy phone as well, and I have 4G in my po-dunk city. Blazing fast, dual-core proc..... I'm impressed with it. Vlingo is not as good as Suri, but it does the trick.
The camera on the 4S is fantastic. Here's a sample picture I took on my canoe trip last weekend.

Hard to believe some of these pictures are coming from a phone.
