This is frightening.
I tend to be pretty skeptical of alarmist stories like this personally. This is awfully polished writting for just another soccar mom.
Wow, and to think I didn't think Homeland Security would work to begin with.
I guess you don't know very many soccer moms...they're a cross section of America - the intelligent and the not-so-intelligent.
The writing in this story is nothing special.
But whether you personally believe it or not, it doesn't change the veracity of the third item in that link (about the guy with the suicide note and anti-American material on a dvd.)
However, it appears that we are in luck, since the terrorists on her airplane apparently couldn't figure out how to read the "Creating a Bomb from Scratch while on an Airplane" instruction manual.
Then there's this.
We can't protect ourselves with our hands tied with Politically Correct Rope
The people whining about profiling are the same who whine about the (nonexistant) dangers of the Patriot Act.
In their world-view, tens or hundreds of thousands of deaths are preferable to inconvenience or rights losses for suspected criminals.
It's all very compelling on a theoretical level, discussed over steaming lattes with your liberal, goateed friends.
It's when your local mall gets leveled while your kid is shopping there that the high-minded theories go out the window.
And watch the blame-game the next time a terrorist attack occurs in this country. The same ones against profiling will be the ones bitching about the President personally not doing enough to keep us safe.
The upside of all of this is, in all of the cases (rumored or no) the goverment had agents in position to intercept these guys (air marshals on the plane, men-in-black on the ground.) I'm pretty sure they're tracking the "Syrian Musicians" now, and they are on every watch list if they weren't before.
A couple of amusing side annecdotes which I mentioned to Beast, Fax, and Bribo, but haven't shared here yet. I recently went to my parents house for a week long vacation. They live pretty close to the Canadian border. On the way up I noticed that they've got a police roadblock on the NYS Northway (87), about 120 miles from the border. On the way back they stopped us (and everyone else) and asked if we were American citizens. This roadblock has been there for many months, and from what my brother tells me, they have similar roadblocks on other N/S roads in the area like Rte 9. With the state police were border police, working the stop.
Also, my parents recently went to play golf in Canada with a couple of friends. On the way back, the border cop asked one of the friends of my parents if he'd been in the hospital recently. He said no, after which they asked him to pull over. They proceded to remove everything from his car and go through all of it (and his gear) with a fine tooth comb. Turns out that this guy hadn't gone to the hospital, but he had been in for an outpatient test recently in which they put radioactive dye into his bloodstream. The border police had picked up on the radioactivity in his blood and an alarm was set off. I find this to be pretty darn remarkable. This is not a rumored story - this actually happened. My parents were right there.
The story has been fact checked. Read This.
I know where you were Squid, and in fact, my old unit was on Border Patrol for some time post 9/11. Severely understaffed, and lots of wide open space to cover.
I agree with you Squid, 100% (never thought I'd say that).
It's time to protect ourselves when others won't (I'm not talking in a Bernie Goetz sense, but be prepared.)
Within the next few months an Ohio bill goes into effect that will allow for ownership of a concealed weapon.. Someone please get me out of the ghetto.
Responsible citizens with concealed weapons permits save more lives than the media will ever have you know.
Read this from the brilliant economist and Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford, Thomas Sowell.
Thanks for the eye-opening article Palooka.. but as I've said before, I'm surrounded by a lot of your stereo-typical black people.. so that poses the problem of them going Anti-Cosby on my ass.
I'm not prejiduce.. I'm just paranoid. ;)
