How do I get a key for the open beta? I have the whole thing downloaded and installed but now it wants a key and I can't find where to get one.
Right after you put in your name, addy, b-date, and hit continue. It'll say download, join forums, and then it'll have your key right on that page.
Edit: interestingly enough, I just resubmitted with a differnt name and email and got the same key I originally had.
I am all downloaded and ready to go, so I'll probably hop on tonight and give it a try. Hope to see some of y'all!
I'm downloading it right now. I will see you guys tonight.
Awesome!
They announced the need for conducting stress testing, and requested folks play on Blackbeard.
So, I've rolled a Spanish FT named Capt. Happy Sails.
I'm hoping to be on for a bit tonight though I can't promise, and Maybe.. just maybe. I'll be on the new Rig! :santa:
A few little tips for getting started I learned the hard way.
Avatar Creation
- The country you choose is your country for all characters on that server.
- Spend as much or little time as you want on your characters looks. aside from M/F, Name, Class, and nation, everything else can be changed later at a tailor.
Tutorials and First 8 Levels
- Although their wordy, the tutorials will tell you a lot. The economy one in particular should be read.
- Auction House Crash Course - Is also a great reference.
I recommend doing the the Boarding quest (attained on the doc you first zone to). Boarding is a pretty essential part of combat.- Then start up the Economy Tutorial Mission. Go to the Shop to pick it up, and you'll get your intro to Warehouses, structures, resources, and you'll gain a fair bit of XP.
- By completing this right off the bat, you'll start earning Labor hours. You don't have to get into the economy / production stuff right then, but it's good to start the labor clock.
- Be sure to pay attention to the icon on the top right of the mini-map. This is how you'll grab your Booty and you'll need to be within range to pick it up.
- Good idea to pick up the Pistol skill right off the bat. And don't forget to grab a pistol from the trainer's supply store.
By this point, you should be around level 5-6, have a couple thousand DB, and have a few Swashbuckling and Career skill points to spend. Plus you'll have warehouse to drop stuff off in. I don't recommend upgrading your ship until you've gotten the hang of naval combat. Otherwise you may drop a lot of cash to the bottom of the sea only to return back to your starter ship without any treasures you had on-board.
Ahoy and let the wind be to your back!
I'll be on at some point tonight.
I've been playing for about an hour and I am not overly impressed with it. I'm going to pass on this one. Plus I just re-newed my WoW account so I'll be getting back into that for a little while. Osred and Choozoo, thank you for all the information on the game.
gomez geronimo, spanish naval officer. i tried to send a tell, but it didn't work out i think. i'll be on tonight.
Right on. I actually replied, but I don't think you saw it. It's rather silly, but tells go to the Group tab by default. you can change that by Right-Clicking on Main, and selecting 'Direct'.
Not sure if I'll be on tonight, then i'll be away for xmas until tue or wed. But I'll definitely be on throughout the rest of the week.
My wife pre-ordered this and is very excited for the release. I would like to play as well. Once we know the servers, we should set up an August Knights society. Any thoughts to country affiliation? Navy? Is anyone else planning on playing?
Oh awesome! I thought I was going to be all alone. I pre-ordered and have joined forces with a few friends that I met during the beta and you're all welcome to join us.. We're planning on playing Spain on Rackham. As well, we've got ~13 people (all pre-orders) so we should have a fairly decent society production line. If we get enough people, I'd be more then happy to split off and form a full-blown AK society.
I'll post here Monday afternoon with my in game name(s) as soon as I've confirmed I can get'em.
Update: Damn, no more betas. See you all in QW!
I added you to the friends list Vax. Don't forget to add "Direct" to your main window to catch tells.
I'll be on either:
Rackham:
Antonio Montana - FreeTrader - Spanish
Pablo Escobar - Naval Officer
I just came across this article today over at Kotaku.com
7 Of 11 Pirates Of The Burning Sea Servers Shut Down
http://kotaku.com/assets/resources/2008/04/potbs3.jpg
What the f*** is going on here? You all say how sick you are of MMOs with elves and orcs, so Flying Lab go and make one with pirates, and nobody signs up? Urgh. Which means it's all your fault that seven of the game's eleven servers are closing down, in order to bring about a "higher density" of players. Guess at the moment there's a "low density" of players. Hopefully this means those who do enjoy the shivering of timbers and the buckling of swashes get a better experience, and that this isn't the beginning of the end for the game.

It's the console kiddies faults.... :uzi:
Not suprised. I quit after a month. The land missions were all the same map. The sea missions were cool, however, there were soo many noobs that the economy was totally ruined. You could not make any money due to people selling things for 1/3 of the cost of making it because they had no clue what to sell it for. Only those who became part of a large society and built their own ships were able to get the big ships. As you leveled, the quests got more difficult and without a bigger ship...you can't succeed. There was no way to make enough money to buy the bigger ships since all of the goods I tried to manufacture and sell couldn't fetch a profit. After a while, it was no longer fun.
bummer, it had a lot of potential....
Ya, that is a shame. I did enjoy the game, though I do agree with most of Vax's review. I stopped playing after ~2 weeks, but my reason was slightly different. I was actually quite successful with the economy. I was making incredible amounts of money, but as similar to so many RL high paying jobs I didn't have enough time to enjoy it. Simply put, the amount of time investment required to succeed left little time to actually enjoy the battles, missions, etc.
So what actually caused me to stop playing (and MMORPG's in general) was the realization that I am very good at business. And if I spent even 1/2 of the time I invested into making fake money toward making real money I could be very successful once again.
So, I made a change in mentality, and translated my life to a game... RL.. I'm now a level 14 SharePoint architect and have some neat quests currently in progress. Still playing a few games here and there, but none that require me to invest time daily to be successful. Currently, I'm still playing with, Skate, Rock Band, Sim City4, and Tiger Woods '08.
It's a shame really when something like that happens. So much hard work and such a good game (from what I hear). So much goes into making a MMORP. But if one little detail or aspect is not done quiiiiiit right, the whole thing can fail. I suspect this is why Blizzard takes months (years?) before releasing massive upgradees to their WoW franchise.
Blizzard is successful because they sweat the details. If they had blown the Auction House, or PVP, or Raids, or the solo-player experience...any one thing...and they wouldn't have been nearly as successful as they have been.
But they got it right.
Im hearing some good things from a buddy that is in the beta for Warhammer 40,000. Hes thinking it has potential for it to be a WOW contender.
Would Warhammer 4000 be the same as War Hammer online?
Looked interesting, altho I had my doubts since I played DAOC that it would be pretty simular with the realm vs realm zerg fest and what not.
Will probably take a look at it none the less.
Still have my heart set on Conan being a winner because I am a fan of PVP and gore and half naked barbarian wemon!
