How is the driver support for the distros? That has always been my beef with Linux. For example - I have a Visioneer scanner, but no Linux drivers for it. So it would become a paperweight.

The driver support for Mandrake has been very good... I dunno if your scanner would work with it, but I'd be surprised if it didn't.
I agree. More and more companies are at the least, offering assistance to those making drivers for devices to work with Linux. So far, I haven't come across anything 'normal' that hasn't worked with Linux. I haven't tried a scanner, but I did at one point try a USB webcam that worked with no problems.
Every release gets better and better but there is no doubt about it, Linux takes a little more work (especially if you aren't 'NIX literate, which I throw myself into that category. I don't know enough to be productive but I know enough to cause a whole lot of trouble. :D ) than Windows.
I think Mandrake is the best "desktop" distribution by far.
I started with the Slackware distro in 1993. This was pre-1.0 days when you had to FTP the files onto floppies and do the install that way. Not for the faint of heart.
Now I'm using SuSE 7.3 and I love it. My Linux machine acts as a NAT (Network Address Translation) server to protect and hide the other computers at home. It also allows me to share one RoadRunner IP with multiple internal PCs. The logging is great, and the protection is superb.
Ich bin nicht Deutscher, aber ich liebe SuSE.:D
BTW, this is my first post in this forum. The guys over at Knights of Valor recommended you to me. I recognize a few fellow Tribes 2 Renegades peeps here (e.g. Abaddon and Widowmaker). Widowmaker rocks.

EUROPE -- October 07 2002 -- Today the Xbox Linux Project (http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/) announced that Xbox Linux Mandrake 9 has been released. This is the first complete Linux distribution for the Microsoft Xbox gaming console.
A 350 MB installation CD of Xbox Linux Mandrake 9 is available for download free of charge from the Xbox Linux website. It corresponds to a standard installation of the (free) 3 CD version of the well-known Mandrake Linux distribution (http://www.mandrake.com/), which has only been released a week ago, so it contains the graphical environments Gnome and KDE, as well as software packages such as OpenOffice.org, XMMS and Mozilla. Since Xbox Linux Mandrake 9 is 100% compatible with Mandrake Linux 9, all additional packages from the official Mandrake Linux 9 installation CDs or the Mandrake website can be installed into Xbox Mandrake Linux.
To be able to use Xbox Linux Mandrake 9, you need a "modded" Xbox and a USB keyboard and mouse connected to the Xbox by a Xbox-USB adaptor, which can be easily built by most users.
With Xbox Linux Mandrake, the Xbox gaming console is just as powerful as any comparable PC with Mandrake Linux 9. It can be used for office applications, the internet, e-mail, Linux games, or even as a web, file or database server.
Mandrake Linux was chosen as the base for our distribution for various mostly technical reasons. We have no affiliation with MandrakeSoft, the creators of Mandrake Linux.
This is an important milestone for the Xbox Linux Project, which aims to provide an easy to use and highly compatible Linux distribution for the Xbox gaming console, to give Xbox users the freedom to do anything with the console they have paid for, instead of being restricted to gaming.
